Your favorite songs can apparently reveal a lot about your attachment style in your relationships. University of Toronto researchers found that people’s individual attachment styles correspond with the lyrics of their favorite songs. Researcher Ravin Alaei explains, “Lyrics matter, so pay attention to them. The lyrics of your favorite songs about relationships may help validate your thoughts and feelings but may also reveal things about your experiences of relationships that you might not have realized—something that you’re going through repeatedly, that you keep coming up against.” Attachment styles can be roughly broken down into four categories: 1) anxious attachment (people worry about being rejected and seek a lot of reassurance about their relationships); 2) avoidant attachment (people respond to their negative expectations of relationships by closing off emotions and intimacy in favor of independence); 3) mixed attachment (people have confused expectations, fluctuating between clingy and cold), and 4) secure attachment (people have optimistic outlooks on relationships, and are open communicators and trust their partners). Examples of avoidant songs: “Irreplaceable” by Beyonce and “Say Goodbye” by Chris Brown; Examples of anxious songs: “Someone Like You” by Adele and “Don’t Speak” by No Doubt; Examples of secure songs: “I Got You Babe” by Sonny & Cher, and “Love Me Do” by The Beatles; and finally examples of anxious-avoidant songs: “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood, and “Bad Blood” by Taylor Swift.
